Editing and Proofreading

Ray Grasshoff is an author, editor, and writer in Austin, Texas.

My Approach to Editing

Eliminate distractions in word, style, format, and thought

that take away from every reader's limited attention capital.

Services and Pricing

Editing is performed electronically with editing software.

Editing product example ^

Editing ensures the accuracy, clarity, and flow of information while preserving the meaning and "voice" of the original text. It includes:

  • correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, and word usage issues;
  • ensuring consistent style and format;
  • resolving inconsistencies, such as in statements and facts;
  • reorganization of sentences, paragraphs, and/or sections to improve clarity and readability;
  • rewriting (limited) of text to improve clarity and readability;
  • ensuring appropriate level of complexity for the intended audience; and
  • identifying issues beyond those addressed by editing.

Unless a paper copy is provided for pen-on-paper work, editing is performed electronically on only Microsoft Word documents (see example above, which shows how Jefferson's original draft of the Declaration of Independence was edited by others).

Beginning at $50 per hour.

Minimum $50 charge per job.

(See testimonials.)

Still unsure? Buy the do-it-yourself book.

Proofreading services provide an errata sheet with corrections and/or questions.

Proofreading product example ^

Primarily of value to court reporters, proofreading editorial services mostly involve reading final transcripts (provided as a PDF) for spelling, punctuation, typographical, and other possible errors.

An errata sheet identifying errors and areas for review is produced for clients (see example above).

My rates are 40 cents per page (proofing without audio), with a surcharge of an additional 10 cents per page if more than 50 percent of pages need corrections.

Rush proofing (less than two days) available at 60 cents per page.

Minimum $15 per job.

(See testimonials.)
